On November 9th fifteen members of Friends of the Parks met at the far end of Lakeway Blvd. to give some tender loving care to trees that were planted by Trees of Lakeway and Friends of the Parks 5 years ago. After 3 years the City crews were to assume care of trees but they haved not had manpower or knowledge of what to do. We found that many cages had been removed to soon and trees were "horned" severly by deer. We lost some small trees but others have survived. When cages were removed the mowers began to mow too close to the trunks of the trees and we found many were damaged.
The $10,000 spent on purchasing the trees was a grant from the Lakeway Civic Corporation. The trees were planted with city crews digging the holes and volunteers (mostly Friends of the Parks) doing the actual planting, watering and caring for the trees. Over 1,000 hours of volunteer hours have been spent on these trees so it is important that we take care of them.
We don't plan to work on regular FOP workdays but will try to find weekdays to work.
If there are people out there who would be interested in helping out with the Lakeway Boulevard trees now and then, please have them call Peg or Marv Hein at 261-6085.
